At ZUZU, we have decided to do a series of short articles on the cities we love to work in. We hope to be able to share some interesting facts you may not have known, information about the culture, history and people living there. First up, home to ZUZU HQ – Glasgow.
People Make Glasgow. Its inhabitants both local and foreign love to live up to that reputation and celebrate its status as one of the world’s most friendly cities. It’s a metropolis of historical architecture, modern quirky landmarks and plenty of free museums, galleries and glorious green spaces to visit.
The word Glasgow derives from Gaelic meaning “Dear Green Place” which is very fitting. There are over 20 towns named Glasgow in the United States, as well as several in Canada.
When it comes to architecture, just as Barcelona has Gaudi and Chicago has Frank Lloyd Wright, Glasgow celebrates Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Mackintosh is considered one of the most creative people of the 20th century and Glasgow is the only place on earth where you can see his work in such vastness. You can learn about his life and discover his world-famous architecture and designs throughout the city including at Scotland Street School and House for an Art Lover. You can also download the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Go Glasgow App. Whilst walking around the city, Bluetooth beacons connect to the app to reveal the story of each building. The app also gives you a map of places to visit and shares news and events.

One of the many things Glasgow is famous for is its music and nightlife scene. Unfortunately, the pandemic has caused this industry to take a major hit over the past few years as they have had to close temporarily however it’s home to some of the best venues in the UK including the Barrowland Ballroom, King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, SWG3 and the Sub Club to name a few. Its LGBT+ scene is very welcoming and vibrant too with a host of bars, cafes, open mic nights and drag shows! We’re sure the nightlife scene will come back just as abundant as before – and probably busier!

Glasgow is also iconic for those who love to shop. From independent boutiques and stylish charity shops to high street brands and quality designers, Glasgow is celebrated for its diversity when it comes to shopping. If you visit Buchanan Street, also known as the “Style Mile”, you can soak up the atmosphere which is full of buskers and street acts. You might even get caught up in a dance-off, a regular phenomenon in Glasgow which highlights the locals' amazing sense of fun and humour.
Home to some of the best University Schools on Earth, Glasgow is an International city welcoming students from all around the Globe. The University of Glasgow is in the top 1% of Universities in the World and holds a close resemblance to Hogwarts with its stunning Gothic architecture.
The city also holds a world record! The Glasgow Tower situated next to the Science Centre is the tallest, fully rotating freestanding structure in the world and is the only one that can rotate 360 degrees in to prevailing wind.
The city is also popular for many sports - football, rugby, hockey, ice-hockey, cycling and golf are just a few examples to skim the surface of what is on offer for both competitors and spectators. Sport also has historic significance to the city. In 1872, the first ever international game of football took place at the West of Scotland Cricket Ground in Partick, situated in the West of Glasgow. The game between Scotland and England didn’t sound too exciting though, ending in a 0-0 draw.

City of Love? Step aside Paris! Did you know that the remains of St Valentine himself were brought to Glasgow in 1868 by Franciscan monks and now reside in the Church of Blessed John Duns Scotus in the Gorbals?
Glasgow certainly isn’t short of character or charm. We are very proud to be working in and have our head office based in this exciting metropolitan. Many of our partners reside in the city too – there really is a wealth of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship - we can’t wait to share news of our upcoming projects here very, very soon.
